Aspects of the Geology and Sedimentology of South WalesThis book, published in 2014, is intended as an accompaniment to the field guide.  It looks in more detail at the stratigraphy, biostratigraphy, sedimentology and hard rock geology of South Wales.

The basic principles of stratigraphy are introduced including the significance of unconformities, geological time and evolutionary bursts and mass extinctions.

Key fossils groups and trace fossils are discussed and illustrated with reference to selected stratigraphical intervals from the rocks of South Wales.

Clastic and carbonate sediments are classified and their most common structures described and illustrated.

Cyclic sedimentation, palaeocurrent analysis and the principles of sequence stratigraphy are introduced.

Seven chapters are devoted to summaries of the important depositional environments: - aeolian, alluvial fan and fan delta, fluvial, deltaic, estuarine and incised valley, shallow marine shelf clastic and carbonates and submarine fan and deep sea.  These depositional systems are lavishly illustrated with miniature analogues, depositional models, graphic logs, photographs and case studies from some of the classic South Wales exposures.

Structural features are illustrated and described by reference to the Caledonian and Armorican orogenies.

Igneous rocks are classified and various types of intrusions and extrusions discussed.

Aspects of the scenery of South Wales illustrated and discussed throughout the book.
